On 22 January 2017 Frank Lessing died completely unexpectedly. The sudden loss hurts us deeply and in this difficult time our thoughts are with his family, with whom we mourn.
“The more beautiful and full the remembrance,
the more difficult the separation.
But gratitude transforms the torment of memory into silent joy.
One bears what was lovely in the past not as a thorn
but as a precious gift deep within.”
– Dietrich Bonhoeffer –
As a company and on a personal level, we are grateful to Frank Lessing for many precious memories, on which we will forever look back fondly.
Frank Lessing joined our company in 1988 at the age of just 26 as an ambitious, young commercial manager. As the right-hand man of Hans Kuhn and a close confidant of Klaus Kuhn, he was a forerunner of the “young generation”. The first office that he moved into was at the old company site on Bahnstraße in Radevormwald. For many years he continued to tell stories about the cramped offices and the good collegial atmosphere.
His excellent business management skills as well as his outstanding work energy and his unstinting loyalty combined with ultimate value orientation formed the basis for his career progression at Kuhn Special Steel. Hans Kuhn soon recognised his great talent and trusted him in all commercial matters. Over many years Frank Lessing was the only businessman in the Kuhn Special Steel management team, where from the very beginning he enjoyed ultimate confidence at the company as well as with all external business partners.
In 1995 Andre Kuhn joined the company and together with Frank Lessing they were the representatives of the “next generation”. The combination of Andre Kuhn the engineer and Frank Lessing the businessman was an ideal match from the start and they complemented each other perfectly. Over the years, the two of them not only developed a very good professional partnership but also a deep friendship, which was celebrated in short trips together or on evenings playing cards.
Working together with Andre Kuhn, Frank Lessing was appointed the commercial director back in 1997. The following years of high growth from 2000 to 2008 challenged him particularly with new demands on the organisation, structuring and also finance. Frank Lessing understood during this period how to meet the challenges very successfully and how to constantly develop himself as well as the company with great strides. During the years 2008 to 2016, an increasing number of international as well as legal aspects concerning smaller and larger company takeovers were added to the job. Here too, Frank Lessing shone through his ability to repeatedly familiarise himself with new issues, master these and achieve success with great determination.
Yet it was not only in the commercial field that Frank Lessing made his mark at the company. His attitudes and values considerably helped to shape the corporate culture. A corporate culture where people come first and, faced with all the challenges arising from the environment, value-driven actions in the company were and are always the foundation. His openness and fairness when dealing with every single employee, his motivating manner and positive approach to life, as well as his great social commitment are a role model to us and a constant reminder of him.
His thorough work and careful, systematic safeguarding approach have always made our company conservative and responsible in the financial sphere. As a company, therefore, we can continue to face the future with confidence. The company will be able to develop further successfully, even if we can never replace Frank Lessing as a person.
Frank Lessing has left many lasting marks behind. At the company and in the hearts of his fellows. We will maintain these and always hold on to our memories of him. We mourn the loss of a competent, loyal and conscientious company leader – but above all of a very fine person.
In grateful memory
