The successful implantation of this energy management system provides a basis for a comprehensive set of measures designed both to save energy and improve the efficiency of our business.
As a medium-sized enterprise with a high degree of vertical integration, we do not enjoy exemption of any kind, and must pay the full electricity-consumption supplement stipulated by Germany’s renewable-energy legislation. Our additional costs and taxes for the year 2013 amounted to about €670,000 in this respect, and we expect to face a further rise to approximately €800,000 in 2014. These increased costs are set to be incurred despite our company’s six-figure investment in energy-saving measures
Our company is being forced, like German households in general, to bear the extra burdens resulting from the country’s inordinate promotion of alternative energy. Much has been written about Germany’s nonsensical energy policies and the extreme additional burdens that they place on its Mittelstand business sector, but there has been no move as yet on the part of the politicians. We cannot, as members of this sector, influence events; we must instead accept prevailing conditions and learn to deal with them.
We nevertheless remain committed to our home location in the German town of Radevormwald, if only for the reason that we, and our highly motivated, well-qualified workforce, are thus best able to meet the needs of our customers. We are trying, in our efforts to soften the spiralling increases in cost arising from out-of-control taxes, to improve all aspects of our energy efficiency.
It was therefore only logical that we should now have arranged to have our system of energy management certified to ISO 50001:2011 standards.
