KUHN EVO ALU 2016 – new high strength and temperature-resistant alloy for winding cores in the aluminium industry

Kuhn Special Steel provides its customers with material solutions that are ideally suited to the respective application. Continue reading

According to the specific needs of the application, new materials and alloys are developed for it. The diverse innovative strength of Kuhn Special Steel is demonstrated by the example of the new material, KUHN EVO ALU 2016. This was developed with the help of market research and good contacts in the aluminium industry as an optimised material for use as a winding core. By means of targeted heat treatments, the material is able to master the range of tasks demanded of winding cores in the aluminium industry even better than previous solutions.

The possible temper grades including mechanical characteristics can be found in the table below.

The temper grade QT 1 is mainly aimed at users with low application temperatures – but with very good strength values at the application temperature, which has direct effects on the service life and safety of the components.

The second temper grade of the alloy (QT2) also shows good mechanical characteristics – even when there needs to be a heat treatment below 550 °C together with the aluminium strip.

The third temper grade of the KUHN EVO ALU 2016 alloy (QT3) is designed for the high temperature area, where the aluminium strip can still be heat treated on the roller at up to 600 to 650 °C (e.g. diffusion annealing). The stability at these temperatures has been proven in long-term creep tests.

Irrespective of the heat treatment, the material is resistant to corrosion and scaling, meaning that deposits and scaling are a thing of the past. We are confident that we have developed the highest performance material currently available for the aluminium strip industry with the KUHN EVO ALU 2016 alloy and look forward to comparisons with solutions available until now on the market.
